It is becoming more common for Reproductive Endocrinologists to offer acupuncture to patients for stress relief, but it is in conjunction with some form of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). It has been proven that acupuncture works for stress relief, but for many women that may be all they need in order for conception to occur naturally so those doctors are not giving acupuncture the chance to work its magic!

Acupuncture in addition to regulating emotions, can effectively correct menstrual and ovulatory irregularities, lower Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), improve sperm/egg quality, treat Polycystic Ovaries (PCOS), improve blood flow though the uterine artery, increase uterine lining among other gynecological conditions including alleviation of painful periods and symptoms associated with menopause. Unlike the Western medical approach, fertility treatment with Chinese Medicine is very individualized and often it is something very simple that needs to be balanced in order to restore proper functioning to the reproductive system.

Here are a few examples of women wanting to get pregnant with whom I have worked:

Samantha G - She had a long history of PCOS and would menstruate only 3-4 times a year at unpredictable times. It didn't concern her until she wanted to have a baby. After 10 weeks of acupuncture and herbal therapy she had a period two months in a row and conceived after the second one.

Tara M - She had been trying to have a baby for 5 years before coming to me with a diagnosis of unexplained infertility. She had multiple failed In-Vitro cycles (IVF) and her doctor canceled the last one because she had developed hypertension due to severe elevated stress. She got pregnant naturally the same month she started acupuncture and herbs.

Melissa B - She was told she had poor egg quality and her husband had multiple sperm issues. After 3 failed IVF cycles they decided to take a 6 month break. She started having weekly acupuncture sessions and they both took herbs, they felt so good they didn't wait the full 6 months and at their next IVF cycle they had more viable and better quality embryos and had twins as a result.

Mira L - With no history of pregnancy and getting married at 40 she wanted a baby immediately. Armed with BBT charts (daily charting of core temperature) it was clear she had a "luteal phase defect", as it's called, which means the second half of her menstrual cycle was not balanced. After 3 and a half months of acupuncture sessions and herbs, her charts looked great and she was pregnant.

Kathy H - She had several unsuccessful tries to get pregnant via Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) with donor sperm. She and her partner had carefully chosen their sperm donor and with just one more insemination opportunity left (there was no more of that sperm available), they were frustrated and anxious thinking they might have to start the process over and also move onto IVF as their doctor had recommended. She spent 5 months doing acupuncture on a regular basis and got pregnant following the next insemination.
